Back to School sign

(2021, August 2) | Useful to all of us as schools reopen amid the continuing challenge of COVID-19 and its Delta variant.

How to Prioritize the Health and Safety of Students, School Personnel, and Families is one of the first pages to be launched in the “Return to School Roadmap” series being produced by the U.S. Department of Education. The page brings us all the following resources:

A fact sheet for schools, families, and communities on the Return to School Roadmap, reviewing its three “Landmark” priorities, and elevating schools and districts that are addressing each in effective ways

A guide for schools and districts outlining what schools can do to protect the health and safety of students, including increasing access to vaccinations and steps for implementing the CDC’s recently updated K-12 school guidance

A checklist for parents to use to prepare themselves and their children for a safe return to in-person learning this fall, leading with vaccinating eligible children and masking up if students are not yet vaccinated.

You’ll find many branches off of this page to other foundational sections of the larger Roadmap series.

More about the Roadmap Series

The intent of the series is to provide timely resources for supporting students, schools, educators, and communities as they prepare to return to safe, healthy in-person learning this fall. Among other aspects, the Roadmap series identifies key resources and supports for students, parents, educators, and school communities for reopening and outlines how federal funding can support the safe return to in-person learning, minimize transmission, and sustain in-person learning all school-year long.

For starters, the Roadmap series identifies three “Landmark” priorities that schools, districts, and communities are encouraged to focus on to ensure all students are set up for success in the 2021-2022 school year. These are:

  • prioritizing the health and safety of students, staff, and educators,
  • building school communities and supporting students’ social, emotional, and mental health, and
  • accelerating academic achievement.

The series will grow (be added to) in the coming weeks and months. The Department anticipates releasing a flow of resources for practitioners and parents on each of the landmark priorities, and will highlight schools and districts that are using innovative practices to address these priorities.

The home page for the Roadmap series, not surprisingly, is at:

As part of the launch of the Roadmap series, the White House also released a fact sheet highlighting the Administration’s efforts to safely reopen schools and support our nation’s students, including how the historic investment in the American Rescue Plan can be used to advance this work.
