4 tips for helping middle-schoolers learn to speak up for themselves: Middle school can be hard for kids. Most kids don’t want to stand out from the crowd. They may hesitate to speak up for themselves, not only with other kids but with teachers, too. Kids who learn and think differently may be used to watching you advocate for them to help them get the support they need.
How to help middle-schoolers gain self-control: Many middle-schoolers act without thinking at times. It just comes with the territory at that age. But if your child seems to have more trouble with self-control than most — whether it’s at school, at home, or with friends — it could be more than just a passing phase.
Navigating Your Way: Ages 14 to 21: During these years that your family member is immersed in school, make the most of the support they have to focus on emerging independent living skills, employment opportunities, and connections to your community. Typically, after age 21, school activities and school based services end. It is important to learn as much as you can about the road ahead so that you can begin to prepare your family members for a full life after school.
